Norfolk Southern Plans $800 Million in Capital Spending

Norfolk Southern plans to spend $806 million for capital improvements in 2001.

"Our capital spending plan for 2001 supports continued high levels of safe, efficient customer service across Norfolk Southern's transportation network," said Chairman, President and CEO David R. Goode.

The anticipated spending includes $449 million for roadway improvements and $256 million for equipment.

Roadway spending includes $264 million for rail, crosstie, ballast and bridge programs; $63 million for new or improved intermodal facilities; $35 million for marketing and industrial development initiatives; $35 million for signal and electrical projects; and $23 million for environmental projects and public improvements such as grade crossing separations and crossing signal upgrades.

Equipment spending includes $224 million to purchase 160 six-axle locomotives, upgrade existing locomotives and certify and rebuild multilevel automobile racks. Equipment spending also includes $29 million for computer-related projects.
