Dear Mr. President:
I urge you to stand up for highway and public safety and keep America's borders closed to unsafe and uninspected Mexican truck and bus operators.
I hear that you may use a recent NAFTA trade dispute panel decision to justify opening our borders. I urge you to support American interests and not the multinational corporations who have pushed the border opening for more than six years.
While Mexico is threatening the U.S. with economic sanctions, Mexican transportation companies are clearly not able to comply with all U.S. safety laws and regulations. And our own government is not prepared to properly inspect trucks and buses crossing our borders or to enforce laws on our books.
Please maintain the current policy that bars trucks and buses from traveling beyond established U.S. border zones. Mexican motor carriers should not be able to bully their way onto our highways simply because a bureaucratic NAFTA panel has ruled against the United States.
No sanctions imposed by an undemocratic panel outside of our government should outweigh the very serious public health and safety threats that American highway users would face if NAFTA truck and bus operators are free to travel across the country.
