WORK OPPORTUNITY IN STURGEON BAY, WISCONSIN
Leadership of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers & Helpers have advised of job opportunities for furloughed BMWE members at Bay Shipbuilding Company in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. If anyone is interested they should contact Mark Kerscher, President of Local Lodge 449 at 920-743-7384.
International Representative Leonard Gunderson, in a letter to retired Boilermarkers, stated that Bay Shipbuilding "has secured a $147 million dollar contract to build a 150,000 gallon oil tanker for Vessel Management Services. This company has an option on a second vessel and there is a possibility that more will follow. This contract, as well as other contracts the company has secured, will generate several years of work at Bay Shipbuilding.
"For several years now Bay Shipbuilding has not been able to hire enough employees to work there. The company has been using several temp agencies to get the work done. The union [Boilermakers] is working very hard to find employees for the company, so they can eliminate the use of temps.
"Bay Shipbuilding has been declared a worker shortage area. Any Boilermakers that are willing to come out of retirement and work the limited hours, under certain conditions, will be allowed to do so. This would be of great value to both the company and the union."
