JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Ten cars of a CSX freight train derailed
Monday evening, and four of the cars fell off elevated tracks onto a
vacant lot below, according to a wire service report
No
injuries were reported and no hazardous materials were on board,
according to Conrail spokesman Bim McGeehan.
The train,
which was headed from Selkirk, N.Y. to Camden, derailed on Conrail
tracks near Seventh Street.
Crews were traveling to the site
and were expected to arrive sometime before 1 a.m. Tuesday, McGeehan
said.
It was not immediately clear how long the cleanup
would take, or what caused the derailment, he said.
Newark
Avenue, a major east-west artery in the city, was closed, according
to the office of Mayor Glenn Cunningham. City officials created a
shuttle bus plan so students could be taken to nearby schools on
Tuesday.
Students headed downtown to School 5 were asked to
wait for shuttle buses at the intersection of Newark and Waldo
streets. Students traveling from downtown to Dickinson High School
were asked to wait for shuttles from Newark Avenue and Brunswick
Street.
