| Hearing to Examine High-Profile Rail Accidents |
| WASHINGTON, D.C.
-- The House railroad subcommittee will hold a hearing next month to
examine the causes of recent high-profile accidents and derailments,
according to a report on Trains magazines website at
http://www.trains.com.
"Historically, traveling by train has proven to be a safe and viable alternative to air or highway travel," panel chairman Rep. Jack Quinn, R-N.Y., said today. "However, over the course of the past year, there has been a number of high-profile accidents on our railways. The railroad subcommittee needs to look into this issue, and ensure that the increase in train derailments is sporadic, and not part of a systemic problem on our rail lines." The hearing is set for June 6. Officials from Amtrak, the Federal Railroad Administration, Association of American Railroads, and National Transportation Safety Board have been invited to attend. |
