BNSF Freight Train Derails Near Seattle
RENTON, Wash. -- Police said a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp.(BNSF) train derailed near Seattle on Tuesday (May 28) and sideswiped an empty passenger train, but there were no serious injuries, according to a Reuters report.

Soda ash spilled from a container when two cars on the freight train toppled off the tracks and diesel fuel leaked from the Spirit of Washington dinner train, said Penny Bartley, a spokeswoman for police in Renton, Washington, just south of Seattle.

"There are not any injuries that we are aware of," Bartley said. "Burlington Northern will have to bring out crews to right these cars."

Another two cars loaded with particle board and lumber also left the tracks but remained upright, Burlington Northern spokesman Gus Melonis said, adding that the railroad was investigating the cause of the low-speed accident.

"Crews are beginning to re-rail the train and the line could be opened as early as midnight (local time)," Melonis said.
