| Northern Town Fears Rail Line Closure |
| PUKATAWAGAN, Man.
-- Rumours are flying around the remote community of Pukatawagan
that the rail line to the community will shut down after the Ruttan
Mine in Leaf Rapids closes at the end of June, according to the
Canadian Broadcastin Corporation (CBC).
The rail line, which is owned by Omnitrax, runs between Lynn Lake and The Pas. It won't be needed to haul ore once the mine closes, the CBC reported. Pukatawagan Chief Shirley Castel says if the rail line also closes, her community will be in big trouble. The community totally relies on the train to bring food, fuel, medical supplies and other materials three times a week. Castel says Pukatawagan will need to begin a major storage process if the rumours are true. "If this is the case, if it's shutting down in July, then we would have to properly plan for an emergency planning - bringing in food, you know, a year of food supplies and medical supplies and including chemicals." Castel says chemicals are needed to keep the community's water supply safe for drinking. She says there are other concerns, including where to store the material, since there is no warehouse in Pukatawagan. An Omnitrax spokesperson told CBC News that the company doesn't intend to close its rail line. The company is meeting with federal and provincial officials about the future of the service. Castel hopes to get answers about the future of the rail line at a meeting with Omnitrax later this week. |
