RE: Amtrak FY 2003 Transportation Appropriations Alert

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

It is imperative that everyone urge members of the House of Representatives, primarily the House Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, the Full Committee on Transportation, and the Republican Leadership, to provide $1.2 billion to Amtrak for FY 2003.

As I'm sure some of you are aware, the U.S. Senate, prior to the August recess, included $1.2 billion in its reported bill. Senate floor action is pending, but the $1.2 billion is expected to remain.

The situation in the House is different. The President's budget assumed only $521 million for Amtrak. The concern is that this will be the amount included in the House Appropriations bill. Markup is expected as early as Friday, September 20.

We are requesting that every BMWE member be encouraged to contact their Congressman and request that they support full funding for Amtrak.

Below are a few talking points or arguments that you may want to use when talking to your Congressman:

According to Amtrak, $1.2 billion is the minimal amount needed to maintain current services. It would avoid route closures, and it would support much needed repairs. It would aide in more efficient operations, and it would supplement the management/operations reforms already self-imposed by Amtrak.

If additional information is needed, please do not hesitate to contact our Legislative Department in Washington, D.C., phone number 202-638-2135. Your assistance and time in this critical matter is appreciated.

In Solidarity, M. A. Fleming, President
