The BMWE recently sent
$5,000 to the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition in support of its
Wall Street Project which was launched earlier this year
with the express purpose of rating America's giant
corporations on standards of racial and gender
inclusiveness and fairness to workers.
Dr. Martin Luther King's last act on earth was to fight
for the garbage workers in Memphis. Rev. Jesse Jackson,
through the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, has sought to extend
Dr. King's tradition of civil rights, gender equality and
workers' rights.
The BMWE has been an active supporter of the initiatives
of the Coalition for many years and is committed to its
objectives. In his letter to Rev. Jackson accompanying
the donation, BMWE President Mac A. Fleming noted that
Jackson assisted the BMWE during the fight with Conrail
and Amtrak in 1992. Fleming has also been on picket lines
and in conferences and meetings with Jackson, working to
see that labor's goals are achieved. |
