César
Chávez and the Farmworkers Struggle A two-hour documentary, The
Fight in the Fields, aired nationally on PBS on April
16. A companion book was available in bookstores April 1.
The Fight in the
Fields is a story of a man, a union, and a time when
millions of Americans joined a just cause. César
Chávez, the most important Latino leader in this
countrys history, combined the non-violent
teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and the hard-earned lessons
of the Civil Rights movement with Mexican American
traditions and values. But Chávez knew that the
farmworkers alone could not win their battle for
unionization, even with powerful friends like Senator
Robert Kennedy. It was the overwhelming support of the
American public, who participated in successful grape and
lettuce boycotts, that ultimately won contracts for the
United Farmworkers Union.
