SEIU Provides BMWE Access To Congressman Gephardt For BMWE Issues

Taking advantage of close SEIU ties with Congressman Richard Gephardt, President Mac Fleming and Director of Research Joel Myron met with him for nearly one hour on May 8, 1997. Fleming and Myron discussed Amtrak release, Occupational Disability and the pending acquisition of Conrail by CSX and NS. President Andy Stern also attended the meeting, as did BMWE Political Director Michael DeEmilio.

As a direct result of the meeting, Congressman Gephardt wrote President Clinton and added his voice to those of 99 Congressmen who have also written President Clinton to ask the NMB to proffer arbitration to BMWE and Amtrak immediately.

Congressman Gephardt is minority leader in the House of Representatives and would become Speaker of the House in the event the Democrats win back a majority in the House. Congressman Gephardt is also a possible candidate for the Presidency in the year 2000.
