Secretary-Treasurer’s Overview

The one constant about the Internet is change, so it should be no surprise that the BMWE is rapidly moving forward in its use of the Internet, transforming both the content and use of its web site.

Now it is easier--and cheaper--than ever for BMWE members to learn about their union and its activities and to communicate with each other.

The biggest change in the BMWE web site is a new, secured member section that replaces the BMWE’s member-only forum on CompuServe. That means that any member with a computer, modem and an Internet connection can access--with a password--a BMWE-only membership message area, where you can ask questions, find friends in the U.S. and Canada, communicate for help and safety, etc.

The cost, service and quality on CompuServe all worked against getting as many members as possible on the Internet. Now you have the choice of how to get to the BMWE on-line, through any internet provider in your home town or neighborhood, such as CompuServe, American On Line, Prodigy, TelWeb or any ISP.

We want participation and this new members’ area on the web is just the first step. We’ve also added more information and features to our web site.

We have a complete listing of all Grand Lodge and system officers and legislative directors, including e-mail capabilities. Got a question? Go on-line and fire away!

Misplaced your BMWE Journal, or want to double check an article from a previous issue? No problem. The Journal, the Brotherhood’s award-winning newspaper, now can be found on the web too.

We also help you find out who represents you in Congress and how to send them a message. The members’ section features a complete listing, as well as targeted messages on issues of concern to our members, so you can just add your name and address and e-mail it to your representative or senators.

All this is in addition to the information on BMWE COPE, Union Privilege and Maintenance of Way Political League programs, BMWE press releases and other information that continue to be a basic web feature. The BMWE site also serves as your gateway to other web sites related to the rail industry, rail unions and the labor movement.

But don’t think that this is all you’ll find. We’re working hard to make the site as useful and enjoyable as possible. We will continue to be adding new features and new information like a chat room, legislative information area, etc. Plus, we expect--and want--you to tell us what would be most helpful--from either a job standpoint, union or just an informational one.

So please, come check us out. The web site can be found at WWW.BMWE.ORG. To get into the members’ section, you just have to e-mail us and we’ll e-mail back a password.

And remember, once you’ve visited, come back for more. With our dedication and your participation it will only keep getting better.
