As
they have from the beginning two years ago, BMWE members
stood in solidarity with first striking, then locked-out
newspaper workers during the weekend of "marches and
music" called Action! Motown 97, June 20-21,
1997, in Detroit, Michigan. The weekend of prayer, vigils,
lectures, actions and get togethers was capped off by a
national labor march from Tiger Stadium to Hart Plaza on
the riverfront in downtown Detroit. Police said the
crowd, who came from 45 states and 12 nations, ranged
from 60,000 to 100,000 at its peak.
The day before the march,
the long-awaited ruling of the National Labor Relations
Board, confirmed what the six locked-out unions knew--the
Detroit Newspapers (Free Press and News)
violated federal labor laws in causing and prolonging the
strike that began July 13, 1995. Buoyed by this news, the
march became a celebration of solidarity, support and
"just being right."
