On March 15, as this JOURNAL was going to
press, United Transportation Union President Charles L. Little
announced by letter to President John J. Sweeney that the UTU was
disaffiliating from the AFL-CIO effective immediately. President
Sweeney immediately advised Little "that the action of the UTU
leadership is unjustified and contrary to the interests of UTU, its
membership and the labor movement." Sweeney also asked UTU to
reconsider this decision and offered to meet with Little to discuss
the matter. Unless and until UTU does reverse this action, however,
the UTU and all of its affiliates are no longer affiliated with the
AFL-CIO and its trade and industrial departments, state federations
and central labor councils, and all officers and delegates to these
bodies who are UTU members may no longer remain in their AFL-CIO
positions. Further details will be published in the next issue of the
BMWE JOURNAL.
