Former President Clinton, congressional and union leaders, including BMWE President Mac A. Fleming, rededicated the AFL-CIO headquarters building in Washington, D.C. on January 8 after a three-year remodeling project. AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney, on right in photo, said "as we rededicate this building, we renew our vow to revitalize our movement and restore the voices of working families in our workplaces, our communities, our government and in the global marketplace."

Keeping the Dream Alive

Martin Luther King, Jr.

January 15, 1929 - April 4, 1968

As part of the annual AFL-CIO King Day celebration, over 700 union activists — including almost a dozen from the BMWE — gathered in Greensboro, North Carolina Jan. 11 through 15, 2001 and marched for justice, rallied for voter rights, took part in workshops and served the community. Plans are now being made for the 17th annual observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday celebration with labor events scheduled around the country. Since the King holiday will be on January 21 in 2002, the AFL-CIO King Day activities will take place in Miami, Florida from January 17 through 21. The BMWE encourages all BMWE members who can, to participate in this celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
