Congress Has a Choice to Make on Amtrak

In the next few days Congress will be forced to make a big decision about Amtrak.  It's a decision that will affect rail service for millions of passengers and jobs for thousands of workers.

The House and Senate will soon be deciding between two competing versions of the 2003 federal budget.  And your voice can make a difference.

The Senate wants to give Amtrak $1.2 billion in funding, an amount that will start Amtrak down a long-overdue path of improving its service, its safety, and its security.

But the House, with the active support of the Bush Administration, wants to give Amtrak just over half that, a figure that Amtrak CEO David Gunn says will force him to begin shutting down the trains as early as April.

No other country in the world starves passenger rail the way we do.  It's good for the nation to invest in Amtrak - it grows the economy in the regions it serves, it helps millions get where they want to go, and it supports thousands of good-paying jobs at a time when our economy is struggling.

Tell Congress to make the right choice and vote $1.2 billion for Amtrak.
