Statement on Potential Change in Leadership at Norfolk Southern

Members from 21 different states convened this week in Washington, D.C. in their roles as state legislative directors to sweep Capitol Hill on behalf of the BMWED-IBT and Rail Labor.
BMWED Vice President Sean Gerie, Director of Safety Roy Morrison and Director of Government Affairs Jeff Joines met with Buttigieg and Bose in Washington, D.C. where the two announced a new FRA rule mandating two-person train crews on all Class I freight carriers.
This Safety Alert highlights the need for each roadway worker and RMM operator to be aware of the safety procedures for Roadway Workers who work around Roadway Maintenance Machines.
Reminder: all BMWED local lodges are required by federal law to file US Department of Labor Form LM-3 or LM-4 by June 29, 2024.
The purpose of a good faith challenge is straightforward: To provide roadway workers with a non-punitive mechanism for raising and resolving on-track safety concerns so the work can be performed safely.
The current trend of aggressive corporate restructuring at several Class I freight carriers is predatory. This movement traces back to the influential Hunter Harrison, infamous for pioneering “Precision Schedule Railroading.” Harrison’s impact continues beyond his lifetime, sometimes with different monikers, but the detrimental results remain identical.
