A recent review of injury data reveals a significant increase in automobile accidents involving roadway maintenance and signal employees. These incidents represent a clear and growing safety concern, especially as we enter the 4th Quarter, a period already linked with higher overall roadway worker risks.
This Safety Alert highlights the need for each roadway worker and RMM operator to be aware of the safety procedures for Roadway Workers who work around Roadway Maintenance Machines.
The purpose of a good faith challenge is straightforward: To provide roadway workers with a non-punitive mechanism for raising and resolving on-track safety concerns so the work can be performed safely.
As we endeavor to learn more about the tragedy on CSX this week and continue to off our support and compassion to all involved, the Fatality Analysis of Maintenance-of-Way Employees and Signalmen group wished to remind all members of the incredible importance of remaining vigilant when performing on-track roadway maintenance work and movements.
Twenty-six years of data shows a 4th Quarter spike in fatal roadway worker incidents.
According to the FAMES data base, 8 fatalities have involved inaccessible track protection. FRA and available Class 1 data further indicate roadway workers often use improper controls when utilizing inaccessible track protection.
Electronic devices are widely used in today’s culture. When used appropriately, electronic devices can enhance railroad safety, operational efficiency, and communication. These may also introduce an element of distraction. Any distraction while performing a safety-critical task can be hazardous and has been linked to accidents and fatalities, both on railroads and highways.
Reminder: Analysis has shown that the 4th Quarter of the year is the deadliest time of year. There have been 2 fatalities since the beginning of this month alone.
