The BMWED Department of Safety is responsible for preparing safety testimony and presentations at hearings and inquisitions and before policy and lawmaking bodies, including the Railroad Safety Advisory Committee, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and  Congress. The BMWED Department of Safety is also responsible for researching and filing comments to the Federal Docket on Notices of Proposed Rulemakings (NPRM) and railroad request for waivers from federal safety laws and regulations.

The goals of the Department of Safety are: (1) to assist BMWED members and officers in addressing safety related matters,  and (2) to improve the health and safety conditions under which BMWED members work through a combination of regulatory oversight, federal rulemaking, labor/management collaboration,  and membership safety and health education and training.
